I am friends with several Chinese students that attend Rose-Hulman and if you ask anyone of them where they go for Chinese food the answer is invariably Royal Mandarin. The restaurant is always clean and the decor suggests a much more expensive menu. The food is delicious especially the Taiwanese beef noddle soup. A half order will fill most people and only runs about $6 All in all, even a college student can afford to make Royal Mandarin a regular haunt.

In my opinion, this is better than first wok and china wok. The price is comparable, but the food is better. The place is much cleaner and doesn't smell like grease like china wok and the pop machine isn't 30 years old and grungy like first wok. I would go more often if it wasn't way acrossed town.

Only visited once - I'm a tough critic but have to admit have tried many other Chinese food restaurants in the Terre Haute area and this one takes the cake thus far. Let's admit it, what are you going to do if you want lots of vegetables for lunch in this area? It's either a salad at Panera, MCL or Traverse City Pie Company - or, worse, iceberg-based at Applebee's, Olive Garden or similar. Chinese food is the only other option. Our visit was for lunch. My wife had diced zucchini in her $5.00 lunch special garlic chicken. That's fresh cut. Zucchini isn't sold pre-cut, it won't hold up. As a matter of fact, all their vegies looked freshly cut. How about that for a fin? They offered white or 'fried' rice (not really fried, white with some egg tossed in). PLEASE get brown rice, management. This is the only shortcoming I could find. They also offer a free egg roll or crab rangoon (get the rangoon) with any entree/lunch special before 5pm. Not sure why the time distinction... I ordered the Pork Vegetable Special (large for $7.95 anytime price). Brown sauce was wonderful - no salty flavor. Lots of vegetables left me with enough leftovers for dinner. Toss in free delivery and an extremely varied menu and we'll be eating their food again very soon. The place is clean and the service quick and friendly. There is no restroom in the Meadows Shopping Center Royal Mandarin Express, but one is available in the shopping center itself. Will follow-up soon, happy 'sticking'.

This review is for the Royal Mandarin at Southland Center at 7th and Margaret streets. There is seating at small booths, but I've only eaten there once. We get carry out and here are the reasons we get it often: Hot food that has not been sitting around or tastes reheated. We like spicy and have tried many of the spicy dishes and love them. The soups are good and egg rolls are tasty too. The fried rice does not look dark and extremely fried, but it is fresh and hasn't been sitting around waiting to be reheated so it has no oily/greasy taste. Mongolian chicken and beef, Mandarin beef, and orange chicken are our current favorites. All spicy but not overwhelmingly hot. Two thumbs up! This, like Los Tres Caminos, is in a strip mall, but is WORTH finding. There is one on the east side of town too.

Probably the best Chinese food in town. Clean, friendly staff, good food quality.

I eat at Royal Mandarin twice a week on average. This place has a lot of character. There's something really neat about being able to see the chefs and manager at work through the window behind the counter. When it's not packed with people, this place even has a fairly nice ambiance. My go to dish is the Kung Pao Chicken. If you are even mildly interested in trying something authentic, I would recommend the dishes on their Chinese Menu. The Chinese Menu is really what sets Royal Mandarin apart from the other local Chinese take out restaurants. Ask the folks behind the counter if you are uncertain about what you're getting. They're usually pretty friendly when the restaurant isn't packed. Overall, the service at this place is pretty quick, the food is fresh and tastes quite authentic (if you order the right thing). That is all I really expect from a friendly neighborhood Chinese restaurant. So, that's why I think it deserves 5 stars!

I have been there 3 times. I had the Gen Tso chicken. The first time the chicken was overdone. The second time same thing so I called. I was told I could get a free one next time. Guess what, same thing again. Will NOT return. First Wok has best as far as I am concerned.

Great authentic Chinese food - a delicious alternative to First Wok and you get just as much for the same price. Service is prompt and very friendly. Definitely the best you'll find in the Haute.

I've been here several times with my mates from Rose-Hulman and it's been an okay experience. For chinese food, this isn't all that cheap compared to what I had back in California. Given that this place is in Terre Haute, Indiana...what else do you expect?

If you want Chineese food and don't know where to go in Terre Haute, here it is. If you are expecting ANYTHING different from what you find in any other strip mall (which is where this is located) than you are going to get suckered in like I did from the other reviews, which are obviously plants.

The freshest, cleanest, and best Chinese restaurant in Terre Haute. Everything is always made fresh and they have a wide variety of options. Pretty fairly priced and delivery is usually pretty quick.

The manager was mean and racist. The food is decent, but I'll never come here again because I was humiliated.

Order from the dim sum menu -- Royal Mandarin's not a gourmet place, but it produces more interesting, and more carefully prepared Chinese food than any place I've been around Terre Haute. Plus, the woman who I take to be the owner is great -- I didn't know what I wanted one day: something spicy, maybe fish. And she took two or three minutes to make suggestions, explain a few dishes, ask me questions about what, exactly, I liked. So, for a Chinese restaurant tucked into a strip mall in Terre Haute, Indiana, I consider this place to be at least a small miracle. Hence, five stars.

Not too bad. I would not say the food was anything special, but still good. And delivery was pretty quick considering it was a Saturday and it was a little nasty out when we ordered. I will also say the prices were very fair especially considering the portion sizes we got.

Easily the best Chinese food in Terre Haute. I didn't like Chinese food until I started coming here. I usually stick with the basics of general tso and my wife usually does the sweet and sour. I feel like this is the cleanest Chinese restaurant I have been too. The price is a little pricey but worth it. I have been to Chinese restaurants all over Michigan, Indiana and some in Florida. I would choose this place over all if those. Highly recommend. Three locations in town makes it even better.

Clean, pleasant setting, friendly service make me feel like home, even better. They have the most authentic Chinese food in Terre Haute. Cantonese dim sum, BBQ, Sichuan ma la ... ... , lot of choices make me always want to go back. Yum yum.

Ahh, the glory that is Royal Mandarin. Being a local, it took me all of a few weeks to realize that this place is far and away the best Chinese food in town. The food is not only delicious and reasonably priced, but you also get a pleasing ambiance as a result of the tasteful decorations and partial view of the kitchen. I eat here once or twice a week on average, and I have not yet had a bad order of Kung Pao chicken, spicy fish or pork (soup), or bak choy with chicken mee fun (also a soup). If you're not sure what to order, just point to something on the Chinese menu and odds are it'll be awesome.

I have eaten at both locations (one off Ohio Blvd. and one off Margaret). I suggest going to the one off Ohio- they have a special dim sum menu that isn't offered at their other location, as well as several entrees that are for those looking for something other than the typical general tso's or garlic chicken. Off the dim sum menu, the sharkfin dumplings are fantastic! Try the stuffed eggplant too. The dipping sauce is delightful. My mom and I like to share a full order of the korean beef noodle soup. It's more noodle than soup, and it's definitely enough to share between two people, maybe even three. Great price, clean place, yummy food! OH, and I hear they carry bubble tea, which I have yet to order. I'm very excited, considering I don't know of any other place in Terre Haute that carries bubble tea. Their standard chinese takeout dishes are delicious as well. Definitely check this place out!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
